One man's Utopia is another's Dystopia [2001]

Disclaimer: this map is not intended to challenge existing territorial boundaries or revise past historical events. This is just a product of the author's fantasy created for entertainment. All characters and events are fictitious and any resemblance is purely coincidental.

In this world ASB helped the Atlantropa project to come to pass. Two great dams were built in Gibraltar and the Dardanelles. Two new seas emerged in Africa. The inexhaustible electricity flowed across all countries. Europe finally forget about the endless wars and united in the United States of Europe. That was a triumph of Herman Sörgel and his associates.

But things were not so good. Drained lands of the Mediterranean were not fertile agricultural land as Sörgel thought. It was dead salty soil useful only for the roads construction and building of factories. Atlantic sea level has risen. Sahara Desert expanded through new African land.
Still, it was Utopia. But not for everyone...

Things started to go downhill ten years after the completion of the Sörgel’s dam. Border conflict in Sakhalin escalated into full-scale Soviet-Japanese War of 1942-1944. This war was stalemated by the intervention of the League of Nations (which includes almost all countries of the world). The discovery of peaceful (and not so) nuclear energy in the 50s has made Mediterranean dams useless. Then there was the Great Indian Revolt of 1963 which sparked anti-colonial riots around the world. Another racial conflict in the United States provoked the second American civil war (1961-1963). After the senseless Cold War with Europe the Soviet Union finally collapsed in 1979.

And the apotheosis of all this was a nuclear terrorist attack on the Sörgel Dam. Nobody knows exactly who to blame for this [1]. Dozens of millions people were buried under water. Southern Europe was destroyed and the USE collapsed. It was the Great Atrocity. November 5, 1983 was a day of mourning.

At the beginning of the third millennium the world has changed a lot. Alliance of USA and UK rules the world and the League of Nations. In Europe, the USE is facing the European Triangle, an authoritarian union of states injured after the Great Atrocity. Post-colonial Africa is a mess with the warlords and local tribes. The world stands on the brink of war between Japan on the one side and the US and Britain on the other. The war that could destroy its participants, since all three countries have nuclear weapons.

[1] - Actually it were lucky Indian revolutionaries who received the British nuclear bomb through unknown intermediaries.
